T Level – Light and Electric Vehicles

Required qualifications

You will need 5 GCSEs in the 4-9 range including English Language and a 5 in maths. You also need a keen interest in the topic.

What skills will I develop?

This specialism focuses on teaching learners the fundamentals of light and electric vehicle systems, including key maintenance and repair procedures. Learners will gain knowledge in electrical systems, power sources, engine types, and component classification. They will also develop skills in planning, performing, and evaluating vehicle maintenance activities, and in safely using tools and equipment.

• Vehicle maintenance procedures
• Electrical vehicle operation and safety measures
• Traditional ICE systems
• Hydrogen vehicle safety and awareness
• Safe and effective use of tools and technology

Learners will explore questions like how light and electric vehicle systems operate, what components they use, and how maintenance and repair activities are planned and executed.

Careers

Students could move into the automotive industry or a related discipline. Students could also consider progression to a university and study a HNC/D or a Degree.

Work experience

A 315-hour (45 day) minimum industry placement will be required. While the college will assist you in arranging a placement, we expect students to be proactive in sourcing their own placement ahead of the programme.

The technical qualification consists of two main components:

Core Component: This provides a broad foundation of knowledge and skills applicable across various industry contexts and occupational specialisms. It includes externally assessed knowledge tests and an employer-set project.

Occupational Specialisms: These focus on developing the specific knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to achieve threshold competence in a particular occupation. This means learners are prepared to enter the industry and can achieve full occupational competence with further support and training. These specialisms are assessed internally.
