Planning approval for new Tamworth College granted
October 2022
South Staffordshire College has been granted planning permission from Tamworth Borough Council to move forward with plans to relocate its Tamworth College into the heart of the town centre.
The new Tamworth College will be built by St. Editha’s Square where the former Co-op building was located. It is hoped that the new college will help bridge a strong connection between the community and businesses in the region. Upon opening in September 2024, the college is expected to bring around 1500 students, staff and visitors into the town centre generating increased footfall for the local economy.
The new college will also provide a high-quality teaching and learning environment for learners. A mix of general teaching spaces, specialist teaching space such as workshops, labs etc., learning and study spaces, support spaces and public facing teaching spaces such as catering and hospitality and hair and beauty salons will be included.
Tamworth College will continue to be the place for local people to gain new skills to enable them to start their career journey, boost their career, re-train or get support to re-enter employment. All courses on offer at the college will continue to be aligned to local and regional skills needs to ensure individuals develop skills in demand from business both locally and nationally.
Claire Boliver, Chief Executive Principal at South Staffordshire College says “We are thrilled that our planning application has been granted allowing the college to move forwards with our plans to re-locate Tamworth College to the heart of Tamworth. The new college building will be designed to reflect the significant heritage within the area and will have a sustainable design. I look forward to being able to welcome lots more people from the region into the college to help realise their career aspirations as Tamworth College becomes more accessible in its new central location”.
