    The BTEC Extended Diploma in Business offered at South Staffordshire College is a challenging and work related qualification providing learners with an in depth understanding of the operations and structures of businesses and this will also equip leaners with the skills required to succeed in employment or to gain access to university.

    The course aims to provide the learners with the opportunity to engage with employers and to experience working in industry placements.

    The course is equivalent to three A levels.

    There is not a requirement for you to have studied Business before as the core units in the Extended Diploma give the learners an introduction to the four key business functions that are fundamental for the success of a business.

    The Foundation Diploma is for learners looking to study business as a one-year, full-time business course, with the option to progress to a second year.

    The course is free for anyone aged 16-18 years. There are no additional costs to the course, other than course trips that maybe organised throughout the year.

    The course is assessed by a mixture of reports, presentations, discussions, examinations and observation of activities. You will be allocated a career progression tutor who will assist with your development and any pastoral support you need.

  • Required qualifications

    In order to complete this course, you will need 4 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above. Two of these GCSE requirements will be Maths and English. Alternatively, you will need a Level 2 Diploma in Business with overall Merit.

  • What skills will I develop?

    The course will allow you to build high level skills such as teamwork, creative thinking and presentation skills. It will also help you develop independent research and study skills essential for success at university.

    The course will consist of six core and twelve optional/ specialist units that support financial, marketing, human resource management and financial pathways. The following 6 core units will be studied:

    • Exploring Business Mandatory Unit
    • Developing a Marketing Campaign Mandatory Unit (External Exam)
    • Personal and Business Finance Mandatory Unit (External Exam)
    • Managing an Event Mandatory Unit
    • Market Research
    • Recruitment and Selection Process

    The BTEC Extended diploma gives you the skills and knowledge to progress into a career in the following sectors Business Advisor, Marketing, Accountancy, Events Management, Human Resources, Retail, Bookkeeping.

    Throughout your time on the course you will be given tasks that are relatable to different industries. You will also be able to take part in talks from guest lecturers from different industries and universities.

    Our students have progressed into studying AAT, higher level apprenticeships and university courses. The course will qualify you to progress to higher education at either foundation degree or degree level as you will achieve UCAS points on a scale of 120-420.

    Our dedicated Work Experience team are here to help and support you in finding a meaningful work experience opportunity.

    Recent studies have shown that employers consider work experience to be extremely desirable. Whilst qualifications are hugely important, employers also require candidates to have skills and experience necessary for the workplace.

    Preparing you for the working world is very important to us, so that you may be successful in your next step.

    Work experience placements provide you with the opportunity to develop your skills; have a better understanding of the industry you want to work in and give you an insight into what it is like to be employed. They can also be great fun and very rewarding and you may even be offered a great reference, a part–time job, holiday working hours, apprenticeships or full-time jobs.

    Once you start your course you will be provided with further information about work experience programmes, but it is never too early for you to start thinking about work experience placements and finding an employer who will offer you an opportunity.

    Work experience is an opportunity for you to gain experience in your chosen career path in order to develop relevant skills. Equally, it also helps you to acquire employability skills, attitudes and behaviours that are essential for future employment. There will be an opportunity for you to reflect on your performance during work experience and you will receive some form of reference/feedback from the employer.

    As part of the course you will develop your English and Maths skills through the use of Century during tutorials.
