    This course forms part of the newly revised Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) qualifications. Completion of this course and the Level 2 Certificate in Principles of Plant Growth and Development will enable you to obtain the full qualification of RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture.

    This is a one-year part-time course where you will attend college 1 day per week.

    This course is suitable for those already working within the industry or for those with a keen interest who want to obtain a formally recognised qualification. Suitable steel toecap work boots, gloves and clothing are required for this practical based course.

  • Required qualifications

    There are no formal entry requirements, however a keen interest in gardening and the outdoors is essential. Discussion with the horticulture tutors would be of benefit prior to enrolment – email tutor Nicola Davies.

  • What skills will I develop?

    On this practical course, you will develop an understanding of the skills required to be able to carry out horticultural tasks in a variety of settings.

    The course consists of 8 units:

    1. Plant identification
    2. Plant establishment
    3. Plant propagation
    4. Plant health
    5. Plant care
    6. Plant pruning
    7. Garden features
    8. Grassed areas

    Assessment will include a range of methods including formative assessments by college tutors, online short answer test and observation by RHS assessors.

    Rodbaston College has purpose built horticultural facilities including extensive glasshouse systems, onsite gardens including allotment plots, formal garden areas and a wide range of plant specimens to learn about. There is a range of additional habitats such as woodland, lakes, wildflower areas and an arboretum. This makes learning on this practical course more varied and interesting.

  • Careers

    Progression can include studying for the Level 2 RHS Certificate in the Principles of Horticulture (theory), which will count towards the overall Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture. You can also progress on to Level 3 RHS theory courses.
