Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Certificate – Level 2

Required qualifications

Ideally, candidates will have a Level 1 Diploma in light vehicle maintenance and repair or equivalent qualification and will have or be working towards a grade 4 in English and Maths.

What skills will I develop?

During the course, you will cover a range of topics that will give you the skill and knowledge to be successful in the Motor vehicle sector.

You’ll cover things like:

Routine maintenance of a number of vehicle systems and components Removal and replacement of motor vehicle units
Diagnosing and fault rectification Working safely on Hybrid vehicles Valeting processes
Removing replacing or repairing vehicle tyres.
You will also work towards your next grade in English and Maths.

Employability skills
You will work towards improving communication skills such as talking to others, working as part of a team and following instructions both verbally and written.
You will be encouraged to develop English, Maths, IT and research skills.

Careers

After completion of the Level 2 Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair course, you will have developed the skills and knowledge to gain employment as a Vehicle servicing technician, Fastfit/tyre technician, vehicle valeter or move into other sectors such as a motorcycle or heavy vehicle technician. or Continue to study at college and apply for a place on the Level 3 Motor vehicle course.

Job salaries range from 18k to 30k per year depending on skill level, time in service, and additional qualifications you may hold such as Hybrid training, Mot tester trained or Air Conditioning qualifications.

Job opportunities within the sector include but are not limited to Vehicle technician, Tyre technician, Valeter, Service advisor, Parts advisor, Sales advisor, Workshop Controller, leading on to after sales manager. (some job roles may require additional in house training)

Recent studies have shown that employers consider work experience to be extremely desirable. Whilst qualifications are hugely important, employers also require candidates to have skills and experience necessary for the workplace.

Preparing you for the working world is very important to us, so that you may be successful in your next step.

Work experience placements provide you with the opportunity to develop your skills; have a better understanding of the industry you want to work in and give you an insight into what it is like to be employed. They can also be great fun and very rewarding and you may even be offered a great reference, a part–time job, holiday working hours, apprenticeships, or full-time jobs.

Once you start your course you will be provided with further information about work experience programmes, but it is never too early for you to start thinking about work experience placements and finding an employer who will offer you an opportunity.

Work experience is an opportunity for you to gain experience in your chosen career path in order to develop relevant skills. Equally, it also helps you to acquire employability skills, attitudes and behaviours that are essential for future employment. There will be an opportunity for you to reflect on your performance during work experience and you will receive some form of reference/feedback from the employer.

English and maths

English and Maths are an important aspect of working in the motor trade. working to timescales,
costing customer jobs, writing detailed jobs cards and good communication skills are required to
be successful in this sector.

Other important information

Learners will need to be equipped for all sessions, this will include an A4 folder to keep work and handouts safe, A4 notebook, Pen, Pencils, Coloured pencils for drawing diagrams, Rule, Rubber.
During theoretical sessions, you may be permitted to use a device during sessions to research information when instructed to do so.

Workshop sessions will require steel toe capped boots, overalls and safety glasses, gloves and barrier cream will be provided. Learners will also need a small pocket sized notebook a pen/pencil for making notes, sketches and taking technical information while working through practical tasks.

Learners without the required PPE will not be able to participate in practical sessions. No food, hot drinks or fizzy pop are to be consumed in the classrooms or workshop areas.
You will also have a Tutorial on your timetable. In this session, you will learn about social, personal and moral issues. You will also have a 1:1 meeting with your Personal tutor each term where you can discuss any issues and targets can be set to help you work towards your goals and reach your full potential.
