As well as the ‘real world’ relevance of the courses we offer and the quality of the staff that delivers them, a large part of our success can be attributed to our Board of Governors. This section of our website contains information about the governors and their activities.

Governance at South Staffordshire College

South Staffordshire College is an independent Further Education Corporation and an exempt charity operating under its own Instrument and Articles since 1993, secondary legislation established under the Higher and Further Education Act 1992.

The governing body of the College is made up of volunteers from the local community, local businesses and individuals who bring a range of relevant skills and experience to the Board. Also included is the Chief Executive and Principal, two staff members and two student members. All governors are Charity Trustees.

The role of the governing body is to set the overall direction of the College and to take responsibility for all aspects of the organisation including its performance and overseeing the management of finance and other resources.

Operational responsibility is delegated to Claire Boliver, the Chief Executive and Principal and members of the Executive Leadership Team.

All governor-related correspondence should be marked for the attention of the Head of Governance:

Instrument and Articles

Each further education college must have an Instrument and Articles of Government. The Instrument provides for the constitution of the governing body of the college and the Articles define the functions and responsibilities of the governing body.

The Board of Governors has approved a set of procedures and processes, the Standing Orders and Code of Conduct, within which the governing body and its committees operate.

Becoming a Governor

The Corporation is comprised of people from all walks of life, who give freely of their time to undertake an important role in overseeing the work of the College. They bring to the Boardroom their skills, experience and knowledge of the community. In return, they find that being a Governor is a rewarding role, which brings them into contact with others who have an interest in the many different aspects of education and training.

At the present time we are seeking to recruit new members. We value diversity and wish to reflect this within the Board. We are looking for talented people with dynamism and innovation who can contribute ideas, share their knowledge and skills and bring a fresh perspective.
